Three white Chicago teens, fuming over an interracial romance, wrapped a noose around the neck of a black high school classmate at knifepoint, police said.
The racially-charged assault occurred two days before Christmas 2011 when the victim was lured to one of the boy’s homes and then attacked, police said Wednesday as details of the case became public.
The three suspects — who showered the victim with racist invective while threatening his life — were arrested Jan. 10 on hate crime charges, police said.
All four teens attended Brother Rice High School in Chicago. The white kids were incensed over a developing relationship between the 17-year-old victim and the cousin of one suspect, police said.
The victim told Fox Chicago News that one of the three suspects pulled a knife and warned him, “Stop talking to my cousin. You are annoying her. If you don’t stop, I’m going to kill you.”
Mark Herrmann, 18, was charged as an adult with the hate crime, unlawful restraint and battery.
A 16-year-old and a 17-year-old classmate were charged with the same crimes as juveniles, with the younger one facing an additional aggravated assault count for pulling a knife, police said.
The victim was beaten by the three suspects before the noose was knotted and slipped around his neck. The assailants unleashed a torrent of racist remarks during the attack, police said.
The trio refused to let the youth leave, although he eventually managed to escape and tell his family what happened.

I would like to know more about this whole ‘defending his cousin thing.’ Because I know of plenty of dudes who have come tot he defense of a female friend or family member in the name of honour. Hell, I bet more than a few of you ladies have called your brother, cousins or ‘homies to go and deal with a man you thought was out of line. Admit it… many of you have and another handful of you have thought about it.
That’s the portion of this I think a lot of people are forgetting but instead going right for the fact that 3 white guys tried to jump a black kid and yelled ‘racist epithets at him and… put a noose around his neck….quite the shameful act.
And by nooooooo damn means am I defending these lil bastard azz bastards. Not in the least. But I’m being real. I know good and well I’ve been called on by female friends to get together with the fellaz and go ‘talk to a dude on their behalf. Hell, it’s how I got arrested for a fight at mardi gras…twice even. So on that front i’m not suprised and I’m not judging.

It could have been just a good ol fashion beaty ass beat down had they left the noose and n***a-ness out of the whole thing. Really hard to say it wasn’t a hate crime when you add that to the mix. Whether it was or not… that’s the way it’s gonna be perceived.

Anyway, sounds to me like the cousin took it upon himself to stop the black boy from banging his cousin. I don't think she asked him to. Probably some ol' incestual type jealousy going on there.

And no an altercation between two different races does not HAVE to be a hate crime…. It could be that either the black, white, asian, hispanic, LGBT, WHOMEVER just needed to be forcefully escorted to an auditorium of seats. However, historically, more often that not, when something akin to this happens, the underlying motivation is usually hate.
Im confused, did the female actually say she was being bothered by the black kid. No where in the article does is say that. So why did your logical side develop that reasonsing? You can defend a women's honour and still be a racist, its really not one or the other. There was a noose around a "N8ggers" neck. The title made it seem like this was some random fight between two different races and racism was tossed out there.. imo.

No, an altercation doesn't automatically mean hate crime — especially when said people may need to eat hot bowl of dacks. Yet this one is cuz of the noose & racial epithets. I also think this was the cousin who had a problem with it versus the girl herself.

Wow this is so messed up but I can't say that I am surprised. I attended and graduated from Brother Rice High School in May of 1990. And let me tell you the racism was just as bad if not worst because it was openly tolerated by the administration. Granted the black student population was less then 2% there was still no excuse. My graduating class of 482 seniors, I was one of 24 black students to graduate that year.
Just a little bit of factual information for you when Chicago had it's first black mayor Harold Washington pass away in office of a heart attack, they announced it over the pa system in school. The response was all the white boys laughing and checking and high fiveing each other and singing *Ding Dong the Nigger's Dead, The Nigger's Dead The Nigger's Dead, Ding Dong The Black Ass Nigger's Dead* like the song from the Wizard of Oz.

Will you can guess what happened after that, all the black students walked out of class and met up in the lunch room. From Freshman to Seniors. We was like fugg sitting in class we protecting the fact ya'll being jerks and we not going to class.
Next point was we as Seniors wanted to have a separate prom from the rest of the student body. Having no say on the arrangments in Junior Prom and the music selection being the worst, we set in motion to have our own thing. Administration stopped it and told our parents we would be not allowed to graduate if we went through with it. Of course we caved into the pressure from our parents. But that didn't stop us from helping the Junior's get it organized for their Senior prom the following year. Guess what, they not only got it done, but it ended up breaking as national news and Oprah ended up picking up the story. See the thing is, the boys that are sent to this school are the sons, and nephews of the power circle of Chicago and state of Illinois elite. I doubt that has changed at all. I went to school with and had classes with Senator's, Alderman's, Police Commander's, Councilman's sons and nephews. And I learned very early on that Chicago is the most racists city in the country. That behavior is learned and reinforced at home. And if these boys are acting like this, the parents have got to be much much worst. Am I shocked that this is still going on, not really. It saddens me to thing that we as a people still have come no further along then a few baby steps from under Jim Crow.

Holy Angels & Saint Peter &Paul for grammer school and I went to St.Willibrod for 2 Days before I realized i didn't want to be around the same people I had just spent the last 7 years with and transfered to Carver H.S(big mistake).
I remember Saint Peter & Paul, in fact they ended up merging with my school St. Mary Mag's and it became Jesus Our Brother. Yeah you made a HUGE mistake transferring to Carver. *sad panda face for you*

The really sad part is the admin wasn't salty about us wanting to do our own thing. It was the fact that at would have been a PR Bombshell. You gotta remember, the city and state's power elite kids went to my school. If the press got wind of what was really going on there it would have been all bad. And guess what, the following year that is just what happened. When Oprah picked up the story, it was all bad. Like she aired alot of the dirty laundry about the whole situation.

Simple answer: No. People fight or attack each other for all different reasons. Doesn't always have to be race, orientation, identity, belief, etc etc.
But this attack? Yeah, this is a hate crime. Once you read that they were "fuming over an interracial romance," you know the reason they attacked him was his skin color.

My problem is with the term "hate crime" in the first place.
In this particular case, three dudes jumped one dude. That's already a crime. It's called assault.
These three dudes then put a noose around one dude's neck. That's already a crime. It's called attempted murder.
What I don't get is how the "why" makes the crime worse. Logically, it doesn't add up.

Or, taking the argument the other way, they don't say anything. They just jump him, beat him up, and put a noose around his neck. No racial epithets are hurled, no threats uttered, they just do it. Is it a hate crime then?
If a white man jumps a black woman, calls her a ni**er, and rapes her, is it a hate rape, and is a hate rape somehow worse than an old-fashioned, garden variety rape?
Just sayin', but the reason behind the crime does not make the crime more severe.
While it isnt neccessarily worse it does add weight on that person and possibly creating more personal issues than if they were just raped or beat because that attacker was crazy.Being raped sucks. I could also see how a racial situation seems that much more sensative in a racially charged country
