Hi all,
Recently a Facebook conversation spawned an idea for an OHN Book Club. Soooo we (Zuly, Sugafree, and Caramel….and Slaus) are trying to get it together so we can start one for the month of August.
Here’s the deal:
If you want to join the book club, please email OHNBookClub (at) gmail (dot) com with your name. (Also if you have any questions…as long as they’re not stupid questions that are answered in this post.)
There are three books on the table for this upcoming month. In order to choose the final book, we are allowing those of you who want to join to vote for one of the three choices. You only get one choice, so make sure you choose the one you really want before you hit the Save button.
To vote, please go to this link: http://doodle.com/kzdg7mn2cgkbzqd6
The discussions for our book club will be held the LAST SUNDAY of each month at 7pm EST. For August the discussion date is the 29th.
You will receive more information about where to go for the discussion as the date gets nearer, and on Sunday, August 1st the book for the month will be announced. (That means you only have a few days to vote, so get on it.)

YAY!
*geeked up*
Man I JUST downloaded iBooks and Kindle to my phone the other day! Reading is fundamental bytches!
Im in!
I read about 2 books a month so.. im down.
Does online fiction count? Because I hadn’t been inspired lately. But then, romance (o all kinds) can get to be repetitive after a while (and I mostly read Regencies).
Oh, and read these books, bytch!: http://www.amazon.com/Butcher-Boxed-Dresden-Files-Books/dp/0451947207/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1280440280&sr=1-3
ive still got the entire legacy of the force books to go through
then 12 books from the Drizzt series
But… I will read one of the dresden shyts. but if i dont like it… i’ll fight you
Dude… it’s a bit slow, at first, but but by book #4 (Summer Knight), it gets good… I got the Warden hooked, so I KNOW you should like it.
Harry is full of good intentions, yet his smart mouth gets him into ALL kinds of aintshytness and f--gery. In a scifi setting full of magic, faeries, thuggish vampires, etc.
im literally FIENDING for part 2 of the Strain. Like a crackhead!!
Part 1.. the beginning og the book? Scared the shyt out of me. was creepy as hell. But then again im a scaredy cat. Shyt had me making sure ALL the doors were locked at night. Didn’t want nan revenants coming to get me and turning me into a damn vampyre.
baby, you’ve gotta read it! Dooooooo it.
http://www.amazon.com/Strain-Book-One-Trilogy/dp/0061558230
I’m recommending the ish out of it. Action.PACKED! creepy! good shyt
check your local library!
I’mma have to get that then. Since y’all mentioned the L.A. Banks series in another thread my huby ordered Minion for me. I hear the first book is slow but it gets better.
Ok, why is The Strain scaring the shyt out of me right now??? I know exactly what you mean, the shyt ain’t right…*whispers* it ain’t right…
Duuuuude… have you gotten to the part where zack looked down from his window and saw a ______ looking back up at him…
I locked ALLLL the windows
Nope not yet. Don’t say anything!! I just left off on the the part with the dark plane. I know I haven’t even gotten to the good shyt yet…
Can’t really get into it until after work on Friday…Yeah, now you got me scared.
That plane woulda staaaaaayed on that runway.
you know what… i think im bout to read it again before we do the book club book…
damn you two bought to have me order this book tonight and express ship that ish.
I’ll look it up!
drizzt and dresden? oh my hubby will love you…no homo
Rina **PAUSE**

@ Rina- Oh, he will LOVE the Dresden Files! I’m waiting for book #13 like a crackhead… for reals.
Me too!
You and me need to get together somewhere and talk about this series sometime!
I have to look at the two when I get home… may even buy both. Good job, guys!!!
I’m in. I won’t be able to join in on the August discussion because my baby shower is that day during that time. But I would love a log of the discussion though.
I get the distinct impression this book club is gonna be all horror/ fantasy/ ‘n’stuff…..
In which case, I’m probably out…….
fubsy nooooooo join!
*oneofus oneofus oneofus!*
oh i forgot
*gooble goble gooble goble*

No it won’t…
@ Fubs- Make a suggestion, then.
Im down like Charlie Brown inside that girl who kicks him all the time!!
um yall payin for my book right lol?
::: daps :: I was JUST about to say that I’d be mad as hale if i was the only dude
where the hell are the fellas at? prolly doin somethin ignant about not reading a book….
Ummm…Willard that’s what the library is for…lol
I read one or two a month, but I’m just not that interested in the fantasy, sci-fi, or horror end of things, so I hope you enjoy it – I’m sure you will, but it probably ain’t for me…..
It’s not going to be just fantasy, sci-fi and horror, FUBS…Do it dammit! ::GROOOOOOPPPPPEEE::
What do you read, FubsyWubsy?
Ok….currently reading “Twilight of the Superheroes”, a collection of short stories by Deborah Eisenberg, which I’m liking.
Before that it was Fireproof by Raj Kamal Jha, which I found very frustrating. A great idea spoiled by over-fussy a writing style.
Before that was Twilight, a murder story involving an undertaker and necrophilia (thankfully no act described in any kind of detail, but plenty of hints….), which was a pretty good book, by William Gay.
Best of all was Deer Hunting With Jesus by Joe Bageant, a book that challenged me utterly, and made me, and is still making me, rethink some of my judgements and pre-conceptions. I love it when a book does that…..
Well, let’s do Deer Hunting With Jesus for September. I’m down…I need to start reading more than the newspaper & magazines anyway
I ain’t sending you fvckers shyt! But I do want to join.
im not reading colonial shyt, stephen king or stephanie meyer. but ill still participate in the discussion…just to hate
Ain’t nobody up in this bish reading Stephanie Meyer!!!
stephanie meyer. why does that sound famil-? ohhhh. that heffa. yeah, i’d rather reinch out my eyes with clorox
Folk gonna have to suggest that y’all choose some books with fewer pages. Can we get a book with about 75 pages next time? Y’all really trying to read and shyt. Like for real for real.
Even Watchmen has more pages. LOL
I’m in!
Is it just me, or did any one else see tiddays / cleavage in a nice read dress in the photo on the main page about this thread. Just finally saw the book.
Meant “red” dress not read dress. (still thinking about dem tiddays Folk saw).
*Slowly raises hand…*

:: raises hand :: it was intentional;
How did I know that…
I figured. LOL

Ok I thought I was trippin at first. Glad someone else saw it.
Whew…I thought I had to sort some things out!
Nope, I saw it too. Very well done, Slaus!

I’m IN!
Hey, anybody read Dean Koontz?
Dean Koontz will scare you into miscarrying even when you aint preggy
Watchers scared me…but Twilight Eyes….slept with the lights on for WEEKS.
YOU are scared of Dean Koontz?? He’s pretty mild to me.
Shaddup!
YES! Twilight Eyes scared the bejebus out of me.
I love Dean Koontz. I believe that I have read all of his books…sometimes twice. My favorite of his books is Odd Thomas. Right now I am reading Portrait of a Killer- Jack the Ripper: Case Closed by Patrick Cornwell.
I do. Haven’t in a while, though.
I LOVE his Odd Thomas series.
I was in class so I wasn’t able to post when Slaus first put this up. I got out of class and found a gazillion emails of people having filled out the doodle and wanting to join. I’m so happy there’s so much interest!!!
I just want to say that if you don’t like the genre of the book for one month, don’t get discouraged. We’re going to try to make things as diverse as possible so that many people can get involved.
Are any of you on Barnes and Noble.com or Goodreads?
I am! The email address I use is ds_angel29 @ yahoo.com
Cool. I just friended you on B&N.com.
I’m on goodreads but haven’t really explored the community yet
I’m new to GoodReads, too. You can find me under my pen name. I’ll change my profile to an author one in a couple of weeks or so.
Anybody else on B&N.com, I can be found on here: http://my.barnesandnoble.com/GeekGoddess-profile/
By the way, we’re controlling for “troll” votes by having you send that email, so make sure you do it so your vote is counted.
nope! aint gonna do it! refuses. just because i can.
I am gonna get your info anyway! *sticks her tongue out*
just know i voted for the book with the least pages.
Always down for a good read so I’m in this thang.
I’m in as long as Meme doesn’t suggest the autobiography of Gucci Mane….or nothing by Zane…..or Terry(ILikeGayMen) McMillian.
Oh, those were automatically vetoed from the get! lol
TWIN!!!
LOL..and I have to co-sign.
No Zane, no Eric Jerome d--khead, Omar Tyree or the like up in here…
None of them either.don’t tell my black family. Lol
but but… eric jerome’s early stuff is awesome ass awesome…. everything up until like 2001
Liars game? cheaters? milk in my coffee? awwwesome.
:: holds my black card ::
I love Eric Jerome d--key! Even the new stuff. I’ve been known to finish his books in one day.
Really? It censored his NAME?
Me too. If you skip past the sex i really enjoyed the Gideon series
I was really digging the first book of the gideon series until he f--ged ol girl from the plane when they got to the hotel and he said:
” she licked me off her fingers like a bucker of KFC ”
NO, NYGGA, NO!!!!
Cheaters was ok but when I got around to Milk in my Coffee, I knew where this ish was headed. Not my cup of tea at all…
I can say I have never read anything by Zane or McMilian. I hope I can keep my black card after admitting that.
The AUTObiography of Gucci??? As if something like that would ever come to pass…LOL
Gucci Mane hasn’t written a book yet! Love me, love Gucci! That is all!
Choc said the autobiography of Gucci…I really dislike you for that…
I hope this works out this time Zuly….I know we tried before…
I’m out…I have lost all interest in reading…sad as that sounds….I will only read 1 book a year…the latest Alex Cross book by James Patterson…they come out every November…use to be my early Christmas present from my mom….even if I wanted to I couldn’t stop reading this series…she kept it going for me…all in hardback…
Guccccciiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!
im in!
Me and MDbrat will have the most intimate date ever in history before i read some zane shyt.
…………Naw too easy
I read 1 Zane book and that s--t got on my nerves!
I don’t know what book it was but I remember there was a side story in it that would have been really good had she stopped all the f--gin’
Dude! And the midgets… (or was that Zane.) The excessive cussing and slang, the ignant stereotyping… UGH!
HAAATE those type of books!
it was the sex that got on my nerves…I mean erotica can only go so far
some street-lit ain’t bad I’ve read some good street-lit…I have a friend in publishing and she works with a lot of street-lit authors and she’s sent me books and some have been really good…and others ain’t worth s--t lol
but then again I grew up reading Donald Goins and Iceberg Slim
and I love E. Lynn Harris’ books read every last 1 of them…broke my heart when he died…
Now I CAN do E. Lynn Harris
I’ve read and own so many Zane books (back in HS I loved them)…I feel like *I* should have a black card. Gimme yours.
You can borrow mine but I need it back…
you can have mine Twin…it ain’t worth a damn but you can still have it…lol
Zuly I keep telling yall latinos aint nothing but black ppl with ‘good’ hair!
I have never come agross a scary book
try “IT” by Stephen King
Stephen King is the…well…king of gross scary books.
Ok
What was the book by him where the kids/ppl are in the airport and the darkness is coming at them erasing everything in its path? I haven read it since middle or hs so sorry for the description
That is called the Langoliers. Scary! They even made a movie about it. His book IT was pretty good too. My fave of his was The Stand. It’s about 700 pages, so you have to carry it everywhere to finish it. HOWEVER, it’s about an epidemic with people getting sick and dying so I would NOT advise reading it on the bus while sitting next to coughing bums. Personal experience.
Girl “IT” is about that long and I finshed it in a WEEK.
Then i had to take a cold shower and I think I cried during.
his imagination scares me.
LOL! Yeah, “IT” does make you feel kind of dirty. I read it when I was entirely too young to be reading it. Kind of messed with my mind a little…
The Stand was awesome but Stephen King can’t write an ending to save his damn life in my opinion.
I bet dollars to dack that if Stephen King tried to get published today, he could NOT.
Ionknow, I read Stephen King heavily in middle school and early high school sooooo, I thought he was just all kinds of awesomeness. Haven’t read a book by him in about 18 years or so…dammit I’m old…
great idea! i rarely get to read for fun.
I’m in! Maybe this will be the impetus I need to venture out into other genres…
I’m in.. got classes starting in August but imma try.
Ok, I’ll join, I admit to being wrong, having looked at the choices there at the moment. The moment it all starts going pixie tho, I’m high-tailing it outta there!
Gonna buy a bunch of books when I get home this evening. Don’t know what yet, but I’ve a whole bunch of newspaper review clippings, which counts as my “to buy” list. Some of ‘em go back a few years, but – unlike with music – I’m not remotely bothered about keeping up with literature trends, I just buy what I wanna buy when I wanna buy it……
And there are a few of new London-based fiction books I want that I’ve just read reviews of this morning – one published in two instalments called London 33/ East & London 33/ West, which is a bunch of 33 short stories by 33 writers about each of London’s 33 boroughs. Interesting idea, bound to be some good stuff in there.
Although, I may not bother, actually, seeing as the discussions are gonna be waaaay too late for me…..beginning at midnight! I don’t tink so……
Do you ever sleep Fubsy? Goodmorning
::Bootybumps::
Whaddya mean! Of course I do, precisely why I won’t be participating in discussions starting at midnight!
In any case, what on earth are you doing up so early?
::Hugs’n'gropes::
T’was only about 5:30 where I am…Not so early.
Too early for me…..though sadly only by about 30 minutes…..
anyone every read any mary monroe books? she has a series that starts with god don’t like ugly thats pretty good…i think its about 6 books long so far.
and i used to be an eric jerome fan but like suga said…after milk in my coffee it started to get a bit stupid.
and i read a few zane books for a book club i was in a while back…and she had one that indicated there would be a part 2 that i really wanted to read….it was a good story after ignoring all the sex…but i don’t think she ever got around to releasing it.
I didn’t like the Mary Monroe books…I tried God don’t like ugly and it worked my good last borrowed nerve
I’m going to have to co-sign with Beth on that one. I was irritated after reading it.
Just sent in my e-mail…dope idea!
I’m in!
I like Eric Jerome … the Gideon Series is great! Not what I expected from him. I can not stand Zane. Her writing is repetitive. I love a good scary book, Koontz and King are good for those.
The nerds are taking over with so much SciFi
… Ok, i’ll go…
So if I don’t send an email but I doodled anyway, I’mma troll….
I know right!! ol Pale booty heffalita called me a troll to! I say we beat her ass.
But you ar…nevermind…
Yep. Y’all are both trolls. :-p
LOCK YOU YOUR GOATS!
*UP
A couple of the books are on http://www.PaperbackSwap.com. It’s a site where people swap books for free, just pay shipping.
