in OHN Book Club

Hi all,

Recently a Facebook conversation spawned an idea for an OHN Book Club. Soooo we (Zuly, Sugafree, and Caramel….and Slaus) are trying to get it together so we can start one for the month of August.

Here’s the deal:

If you want to join the book club, please email OHNBookClub (at) gmail (dot) com with your name. (Also if you have any questions…as long as they’re not stupid questions that are answered in this post.)

There are three books on the table for this upcoming month. In order to choose the final book, we are allowing those of you who want to join to vote for one of the three choices. You only get one choice, so make sure you choose the one you really want before you hit the Save button.

To vote, please go to this link: http://doodle.com/kzdg7mn2cgkbzqd6

The discussions for our book club will be held the LAST SUNDAY of each month at 7pm EST. For August the discussion date is the 29th.

You will receive more information about where to go for the discussion as the date gets nearer, and on Sunday, August 1st the book for the month will be announced. (That means you only have a few days to vote, so get on it.)

Tell a friend, tell ya momma, tell that one heffa you hate!

5 Slausalicious July 29, 2010 at 4:42 pm

I read about 2 books a month so.. im down.

6 Caramel (naturally twisted and coppertopped) July 29, 2010 at 4:51 pm

Does online fiction count? Because I hadn’t been inspired lately. But then, romance (o all kinds) can get to be repetitive after a while (and I mostly read Regencies).

Oh, and read these books, bytch!: http://www.amazon.com/Butcher-Boxed-Dresden-Files-Books/dp/0451947207/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1280440280&sr=1-3

7 Slausalicious July 29, 2010 at 4:53 pm

ive still got the entire legacy of the force books to go through

then 12 books from the Drizzt series

But… I will read one of the dresden shyts. but if i dont like it… i’ll fight you

8 Caramel (naturally twisted and coppertopped) July 29, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Dude… it’s a bit slow, at first, but but by book #4 (Summer Knight), it gets good… I got the Warden hooked, so I KNOW you should like it.

Harry is full of good intentions, yet his smart mouth gets him into ALL kinds of aintshytness and f--gery. In a scifi setting full of magic, faeries, thuggish vampires, etc.

9 slaus July 29, 2010 at 5:05 pm

im literally FIENDING for part 2 of the Strain. Like a crackhead!!

Part 1.. the beginning og the book? Scared the shyt out of me. was creepy as hell. But then again im a scaredy cat. Shyt had me making sure ALL the doors were locked at night. Didn’t want nan revenants coming to get me and turning me into a damn vampyre.

baby, you’ve gotta read it! Dooooooo it.

http://www.amazon.com/Strain-Book-One-Trilogy/dp/0061558230
I’m recommending the ish out of it. Action.PACKED! creepy! good shyt

check your local library!

10 Jai July 29, 2010 at 5:14 pm

24 Jai July 29, 2010 at 5:12 pm

35 FubsyNumbles July 29, 2010 at 5:53 pm

I read one or two a month, but I’m just not that interested in the fantasy, sci-fi, or horror end of things, so I hope you enjoy it – I’m sure you will, but it probably ain’t for me…..

36 Sugafree is on the plantation July 29, 2010 at 6:08 pm

It’s not going to be just fantasy, sci-fi and horror, FUBS…Do it dammit! ::GROOOOOOPPPPPEEE::

37 Wanna July 29, 2010 at 7:30 pm

What do you read, FubsyWubsy?

38 MCFubsyNumbles July 30, 2010 at 4:14 am

Ok….currently reading “Twilight of the Superheroes”, a collection of short stories by Deborah Eisenberg, which I’m liking.

Before that it was Fireproof by Raj Kamal Jha, which I found very frustrating. A great idea spoiled by over-fussy a writing style.

Before that was Twilight, a murder story involving an undertaker and necrophilia (thankfully no act described in any kind of detail, but plenty of hints….), which was a pretty good book, by William Gay.

Best of all was Deer Hunting With Jesus by Joe Bageant, a book that challenged me utterly, and made me, and is still making me, rethink some of my judgements and pre-conceptions. I love it when a book does that…..

39 That Dude Formerly Known as SMH July 30, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Well, let’s do Deer Hunting With Jesus for September. I’m down…I need to start reading more than the newspaper & magazines anyway

40 Folk loves legs! July 29, 2010 at 6:14 pm

44 Folk loves legs! July 29, 2010 at 6:19 pm

Shaddup!

71 Lucee1976(Single & Ready to Mingle) July 29, 2010 at 11:15 pm

I love Dean Koontz. I believe that I have read all of his books…sometimes twice. My favorite of his books is Odd Thomas. Right now I am reading Portrait of a Killer- Jack the Ripper: Case Closed by Patrick Cornwell.

72 Wanna July 29, 2010 at 7:47 pm

I do. Haven’t in a while, though.

73 mehtare July 31, 2010 at 1:14 am

I LOVE his Odd Thomas series.

74 Zuly July 29, 2010 at 7:44 pm

I was in class so I wasn’t able to post when Slaus first put this up. I got out of class and found a gazillion emails of people having filled out the doodle and wanting to join. I’m so happy there’s so much interest!!!

I just want to say that if you don’t like the genre of the book for one month, don’t get discouraged. We’re going to try to make things as diverse as possible so that many people can get involved.

75 Wanna July 29, 2010 at 7:48 pm

Are any of you on Barnes and Noble.com or Goodreads?

76 Zuly July 29, 2010 at 7:57 pm

Anybody else on B&N.com, I can be found on here: http://my.barnesandnoble.com/GeekGoddess-profile/

80 Zuly July 29, 2010 at 7:51 pm

85 I Am Chocl8t July 29, 2010 at 8:07 pm

96 Slaus July 30, 2010 at 12:51 pm

” she licked me off her fingers like a bucker of KFC ”

NO, NYGGA, NO!!!!

97 Sugafree is the Bee Basher(thx Fubs) July 29, 2010 at 10:00 pm

Cheaters was ok but when I got around to Milk in my Coffee, I knew where this ish was headed. Not my cup of tea at all…

98 Jai July 29, 2010 at 8:23 pm

I can say I have never read anything by Zane or McMilian. I hope I can keep my black card after admitting that.

99 SunnieDee July 29, 2010 at 8:24 pm

The AUTObiography of Gucci??? As if something like that would ever come to pass…LOL

100 Meme Mane July 30, 2010 at 8:46 am

Gucci Mane hasn’t written a book yet! Love me, love Gucci! That is all!

101 Bethlanai July 29, 2010 at 8:45 pm

106 Bethlanai July 29, 2010 at 8:59 pm

I read 1 Zane book and that s--t got on my nerves!

I don’t know what book it was but I remember there was a side story in it that would have been really good had she stopped all the f--gin’

107 Caramel July 29, 2010 at 9:10 pm

Dude! And the midgets… (or was that Zane.) The excessive cussing and slang, the ignant stereotyping… UGH!

HAAATE those type of books!

108 Bethlanai July 29, 2010 at 9:21 pm

it was the sex that got on my nerves…I mean erotica can only go so far

some street-lit ain’t bad I’ve read some good street-lit…I have a friend in publishing and she works with a lot of street-lit authors and she’s sent me books and some have been really good…and others ain’t worth s--t lol

but then again I grew up reading Donald Goins and Iceberg Slim

and I love E. Lynn Harris’ books read every last 1 of them…broke my heart when he died…

109 Sugafree is the Bee Basher(thx Fubs) July 29, 2010 at 10:03 pm

110 Zuly July 29, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Zuly I keep telling yall latinos aint nothing but black ppl with ‘good’ hair!

114 BluBerries July 29, 2010 at 9:51 pm

I have never come agross a scary book

115 Ambz July 29, 2010 at 10:42 pm

try “IT” by Stephen King

116 SunnieDee July 29, 2010 at 11:08 pm

Stephen King is the…well…king of gross scary books.

117 BluBerries July 29, 2010 at 11:12 pm

Ok

What was the book by him where the kids/ppl are in the airport and the darkness is coming at them erasing everything in its path? I haven read it since middle or hs so sorry for the description

118 Virtual Virgo July 30, 2010 at 4:27 am

That is called the Langoliers. Scary! They even made a movie about it. His book IT was pretty good too. My fave of his was The Stand. It’s about 700 pages, so you have to carry it everywhere to finish it. HOWEVER, it’s about an epidemic with people getting sick and dying so I would NOT advise reading it on the bus while sitting next to coughing bums. Personal experience. :(

119 ambboogie July 30, 2010 at 8:52 am

Girl “IT” is about that long and I finshed it in a WEEK.
Then i had to take a cold shower and I think I cried during.

his imagination scares me.

120 Sugafree is on the plantation July 30, 2010 at 12:48 pm

LOL! Yeah, “IT” does make you feel kind of dirty. I read it when I was entirely too young to be reading it. Kind of messed with my mind a little…

121 Slaus July 30, 2010 at 12:53 pm

The Stand was awesome but Stephen King can’t write an ending to save his damn life in my opinion.

I bet dollars to dack that if Stephen King tried to get published today, he could NOT.

122 Sugafree is on the plantation July 30, 2010 at 1:04 pm

Ionknow, I read Stephen King heavily in middle school and early high school sooooo, I thought he was just all kinds of awesomeness. Haven’t read a book by him in about 18 years or so…dammit I’m old…

123 mdc July 29, 2010 at 10:00 pm

great idea! i rarely get to read for fun.

124 Tori D. July 29, 2010 at 10:43 pm

I’m in! Maybe this will be the impetus I need to venture out into other genres…

125 Ambz July 29, 2010 at 10:43 pm

I’m in.. got classes starting in August but imma try.

126 MCFubsyNumbles July 30, 2010 at 3:54 am

Ok, I’ll join, I admit to being wrong, having looked at the choices there at the moment. The moment it all starts going pixie tho, I’m high-tailing it outta there!

Gonna buy a bunch of books when I get home this evening. Don’t know what yet, but I’ve a whole bunch of newspaper review clippings, which counts as my “to buy” list. Some of ‘em go back a few years, but – unlike with music – I’m not remotely bothered about keeping up with literature trends, I just buy what I wanna buy when I wanna buy it……

127 MCFubsyNumbles July 30, 2010 at 4:01 am

And there are a few of new London-based fiction books I want that I’ve just read reviews of this morning – one published in two instalments called London 33/ East & London 33/ West, which is a bunch of 33 short stories by 33 writers about each of London’s 33 boroughs. Interesting idea, bound to be some good stuff in there.

128 MCFubsyNumbles July 30, 2010 at 4:20 am

Although, I may not bother, actually, seeing as the discussions are gonna be waaaay too late for me…..beginning at midnight! I don’t tink so……

129 Virtual Virgo July 30, 2010 at 4:29 am

Do you ever sleep Fubsy? Goodmorning :)
::Bootybumps::

130 MCFubsyNumbles July 30, 2010 at 4:37 am

Whaddya mean! Of course I do, precisely why I won’t be participating in discussions starting at midnight!

In any case, what on earth are you doing up so early?

::Hugs’n'gropes::

131 Virtual Virgo July 30, 2010 at 5:53 am

T’was only about 5:30 where I am…Not so early. :)

132 MCFubsyNumbles July 30, 2010 at 5:57 am

Too early for me…..though sadly only by about 30 minutes…..

133 msvonn July 30, 2010 at 6:16 am

anyone every read any mary monroe books? she has a series that starts with god don’t like ugly thats pretty good…i think its about 6 books long so far.

and i used to be an eric jerome fan but like suga said…after milk in my coffee it started to get a bit stupid.

and i read a few zane books for a book club i was in a while back…and she had one that indicated there would be a part 2 that i really wanted to read….it was a good story after ignoring all the sex…but i don’t think she ever got around to releasing it.

134 Bethlanai July 30, 2010 at 7:15 am

I didn’t like the Mary Monroe books…I tried God don’t like ugly and it worked my good last borrowed nerve

135 Sugafree is on the plantation July 30, 2010 at 12:50 pm

I’m in!

I like Eric Jerome … the Gideon Series is great! Not what I expected from him. I can not stand Zane. Her writing is repetitive. I love a good scary book, Koontz and King are good for those.
