Common & Serena say fugg a stereotype.
Your favourite power couple that aren’t really a “couple”, were out having a damn good time enjoying life in Hawaii doing what more folks need to.
Just enjoy themselves.
As I was peeping these folks living it up and enjoying a few waves, I thought to myself… I bet there is someone out there right now saying: Black People Surf?
Yes, bytch. Yes we do.
I know we like to have a great time joking about what we happily refer to as Black Folk Shit and Wife folk Shit, but when it comes down to it we are all pretty damn similar in the things we enjoy.
You might THINK that black people don’t para sail, surf, watch hockey, play dungeon n dragons, sky dive, save money, be father’s, or investigate spookey noises, but we do. Just as when you sit next to that nerdy Asian guy in class for months only to see that same kid free-styling some ill lyrics at the local hip-hop spot, and it makes your jaw drop.
As much as we are all Black, Asian, Latino, Beige, White, etc, there are plenty of things we might do that is viewed as straight up stereotypical. But when you break it down to the invidivual level? I bet many of us would be suprised to discover the things each of your fellow OHNfam enjoy that might be seen as going against the norm.
So let’s find out… name 5 activities you enjoy that other’s might find to be completely against the stereotype.
p.s. Serena got ASS!!

I’ve jumped out of a speed boat into the Atlantic Ocean …. drunk … with a bunch of folks that were also drunk and jumping out of the boat … once or twice before. Okay, maybe three times, but that was it.
But hey, I guess that’s what happens when you have non-black friends - you do some um, strange stuff.
I’ve also done some camping up some mountains in Connecticut for 2 days (with the same set of folks in the speed boat, also drunk again for the entire 2 days). It was fun but I’m not dying to go to the bathroom in the woods again anytime soon.

Learning is my main thing. I’ve always said that if I could make a living out of learning that would be it. That means lots of books, documentaries and weird tv shows. I am fascinated by UFOs, the Bermuda triangle and all those other “not so normal” mysteries. If it goes against the grain, I like it.
If I were athletic I’d be a runner. Running just cause and not cause the po po is behind me. I’m working on that.
I like cars. Not just looking at them but I want to be able to take them apart and put them back together…engines and all.
*cough* i wanna go camping and sky diving.
Im sure there is more but thats all i can think of right now.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Jaila, the Bermuda Triangle, UFO encounters, The Philadelphia Experiment, etc all of those type of mysteries absolutely mesmerize me, too!
Les - rock wall climbing IS fun, but it is NO joke! I climbed 4 walls back-to-back, and couldn’t feel my arms or legs for 8 days.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

I’ve read most of the P.G. Wodehouse’s novels with Jeeves and Wooster. Funny as hell.
I’m fascinated by really dirty, skanky NY Punk from the ’70s. That’s specific.
I can’t really dance Salsa even though I was raised in the South Bronx, home of Fania Records. But that’s because I freeze up in public.
Oh yeah. I’m really shy.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
LOL @ divalake. I was about to say the same thing!! Good shyt tho les.

- I wont watch BET no matter what is on.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
I enjoy some country music and in some cases, have been to several concerts, yes, I’m the only spot of ink on the page when I get there, but the shock of seeing people’s faces when I can sing along is priceless.
I read voraciously because I can complete a 300 page novel in about 3.5 hours if I’m left alone and the book is good.
I’m a consultant and travel 4 days out of the week for work. So, when I commute, it involves an airplane and a hotel.
October 14th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
I’ve gone to festivals that require you to sleep outside.
I’ve slept outside waiting for concert tickets.
I read for fun…on the bus always with a book.
I shop at the farmers market

I know who Ween is.
I would buy a ticket to a Ween, Weezer, or Ozomatli concert over. Weezy, Young Jeezy or Omarion.
I still refuse to go to RenFest even though K would look mighty nice with in a bodice and all beer wenchy.

I dont like watermelon or any melons for that matter and rarely eat friend chicken, I never ate pigs feet, ears, chitlins and all the other nasty shit and just gave up pork all together (pepperoni and sausage) six months ago.

@Wilfredo - have you read the Dorothy Sayers novels with Lord Peter Wimsey?
October 14th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
@Slausnificent
Problem with fiction is that if you can find one that is geared toward black men it is very poorly written.
Never mind that you have to have time to read it.
October 14th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
@ mike - I just wanted to be argumentative. I dont particularly enjoy reading any books that arent about Vampires, werewolves, withces, dark elves, Africam American studies, or behavioural psych

October 14th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Can’t Take It: I do have about 5 Sayer books in my library that I’ve been meaning to read for about ten years now, but I always put it off for the more hard boiled variety of mysteries. I have seen Lord Wimsey on Mystery, though. But I’ve read all the Sherlock Holmes stories. Well, all except for one. The last one that Conan Doyle wrote. I’m saving that for my twilight years.
Oh yeah. I also talk funny.

October 15th, 2008 at 8:28 am
@ sammy…i agree on grease. grease, footloose, and the sound of music…i watch them every time they are on TV.
the only thing i can think of to add is the history channel. they have some amazing things on that channel.
October 15th, 2008 at 8:59 am
Since my mama is white, I suppose I’ve learned to love many o’white things in my life. Like “A Prarie Home Companion.” What. Garrison Keillor is the man!
I also like Elvis Presley movies.
I hate nigglature.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! a parade! My husband is in hell every 4th of July =) If there is a parade, I am there! ps. The best parade I’ve ever experienced (b/c it is a true experience) is the annual Christmas Parade down “The Avenue” in Baltimore - especially if you happen to stand with a bunch of queens.
I often tell my husband that he needs more white friends b/c he can never find anyone to do the things he likes to do - like mountain biking, skiing (actually hitting the slopes, not just showing up to the parties looking for ass in their now-n-later colored gators!), etc.
October 15th, 2008 at 11:08 am

@ Wilfredo
I’m allergic to Fleetwood Mac….
…helllo, look at the skirt! It’s like being at Ren Fests and they are the opening act! I know on one of their album covers one guy is wearing muklukks…or something.
October 16th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
@ SmithnPdx: Yeah, Stevie Nicks held on to that look with the skirts for about a good thirty years. I think maybe she still dresses like that.
